How to Get Motivated

It happened again.

I woke up in the middle of the night because my right leg was asleep.  Why is it doing that?  The doctors don’t quite know.  According to the MRI, I have a normal, healthy back, but after a lifting injury with a patient about 4 months ago, not only did I experience pain in my back, but my leg started going to sleep.

If I wasn’t motivated to build my business before, you know I was motivated then.  I have been a physical therapist for 14 years, the last 8 as a contractor.  That’s the good and the bad news. If you don’t work as a contractor, you don’t get paid.  You have more flexibility and more money, but for all-intensive purposes, I call it my day job, because if I can’t perform physically, I can’t make money.

That has always been nagging in the back of my mind.  Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE being a therapist.  I am excellent at it.  I love helping people, but it is hard on the body if you get hurt and it will not pay me enough for the lifestyle I am trying to create.

So as I sit here, thinking about my situation and wanting to use it to help you, I came up with 3 things you can do to get motivated.

  1. Think about your ultimate goal.  If money or fear was not a factor and you could do anything you wanted, what would you choose to do?
  2. Think about your purpose. If you could get paid to do the things you love, that come naturally to you and other people have trouble with, what would that thing be.
  3. What things are you putting up with that could be eliminated if you could print money?

Of course, there is always the usual: tell people about it, come up with a reward for once you get it, etc.  But for me, the key to not only getting motivated, but staying motivated is find internal motivation versus external motivation.

Wonder how the actors, musicians and dancers keep going to audition after audition after audition?  There is a knowing that this is what they were meant to do.  Wonder how the best salesmen in the world keep facing rejection after rejection? They know that it’s just a numbers game.  How do so many finish their college degrees? They know it’s only a matter of time, even with the difficult courses.

This is my wish for you, that you know that the vision that was given to you is yours and each and every day you wake up knowing that this is what you were meant to do. That you faced every “no” knowing that it’s just a numbers game and continued on knowing it’s only a matter of time.
