What to do when you feel overwhelmed

Many of my clients still have a job while building their business.  The common complaint? I don’t have time to build my business.  There is so much to do.

We all know there are only 24 hours in a day and I would hate to see Beyonce’s daily schedule.  So what makes the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t?

It’s usually two things.  How you are looking at it and how you are going about it.

What happens when we think, I’m so overwhelmed?  I don’t know about you, but it makes me want to either do nothing or lie down and take a nap, also resulting in nothing getting done.

So, what can you do when you are starting to feel overwhelmed?

1. Write it down.  What exactly is all of this stuff?  You’d be amazed how many times all of this stuff, is really a few things that have to get done.  The next time you feel overwhelmed, write it down so you can actually see it. Don’t let it swirl around in your head and take you out of the game.

2. Look at it.  What’s the outcome you want? Do you have to do all of the things on this list to achieve it? If not, then chuck them.

If you can’t just cross them off the list, who can you pay to do them?  This really makes some people nervous because they are worried about the other person’s quality of work and/or they are worried about paying for it.  When it comes to the quality of work, you want to vet a person with small projects before using them for larger ones.  When you think about the money you are investing in getting help, consider how much you make in a hour and what revenue-producing activities you could be performing if you had that extra time in your day.

I am still amazed at the amount of work a VA (virtual assistant) can get done in an hour because they are skilled at those tasks and/or do them every day where I would have to play with it, look up tutorials on You Tube, dial a friend.  My advice? Learn how to delegate often and early.

3. Breathe and focus. A lot of times when I feel overwhelmed I just need to stop, take a few deep breaths and focus on the task at hand.  I am usually starting to rush and that is making my anxious.

4. Plan ahead.  The final tip I have for you is to plan ahead.  If you are building your business after work and you only have 1-2 hours to get things done before or after work, time is of the essence.  If you wait until you sit down to try to figure out what you need to be doing, you will waste a lot of time and become frustrated, wondering why the time seems to run out before you get anything done.

What things do you do when you are feeling overwhelmed? I would love to hear your take.
